Hyderabad: VEM Technologies Private Limited, a Hyderabad-based defence company specialising in the design, development and manufacture of weapon and air-based systems, is set to produce heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy under the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative.
As a part of the initiative, VEM Technologies, which is collaborating with TKMS, a German-based naval company, signed a cooperation agreement (teaming agreement) here on Tuesday. Through this agreement, both companies will jointly produce heavyweight torpedoes for the existing submarine fleet of the Indian Navy.
In the medium term, the joint project is to involve the establishment of a joint venture between VEM and TKMS, which is intended to supply the Indian market long-term with high-quality heavyweight torpedoes, besides opening up new export opportunities.
ATLAS ELEKTRONIK, a segment of TKMS, will enable VEM to transfer the necessary technology and corresponding software licenses to ensure production in Indian manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, a more in-depth cooperation between TKMS and VEM is also conceivable in future torpedo programmes.
ATLAS ELEKTRONIK executive vice president Michael Ozegowski said, “With this agreement, we are completing the next important milestone in our strategic partnership with VEM and underlining our commitment to the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative. The transfer of our torpedo technology enables VEM to make a decisive contribution to strengthening the Indian Navy and to India’s technological independence.”
