Venkanna selected for Sahitya Akademi award, KCR congratulates MLC

Hyderabad: TRS MLC, lyricist and poet Goreti Venkanna has been chosen for the Sahitya Akademi Awards for 2021.
The Sahitya Akademi announced its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards in 20 languages on Thursday. Seven books of poetry, two novels, five short stories, two plays, one each of biography, autobiography, criticism and epic poetry have won the awards.
The awards, recommended by distinguished jury members in 20 Indian languages, were approved by the executive board of the Akademi which met on Thursday under the Chairmanship of Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar, president, Sahitya Akademi.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Thursday congratulated the TRS MLC, lyricist and poet Goreti Venkanna for getting prestigious national Sahitya AKademy award.
“It’s a great honour for Venkanna to receive the award for his poems ‘Vallanki Talam,” the Chief Minister said in a statement here. He said that Venkanna’s literature explained the problems of people in their daily life with a touch of social philosophy to the mankind.
Venkanna was also credited with explaining the link between human life and nature and the connection between man and animal and bird life, he said.
Through his literature, Venkanna universalized the smell of Telangana soil. Venkanna played a great role through his literature as a poet during the Telangana movement, the Chief Minister added.
According to Akademi, the executive board declared the awards on the basis of unanimous selections made by the jurors or selection made on the basis of majority vote. The awards relate to books first published during the five years immediately preceding the year of award (i.e. between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019).
The award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl and an amount of Rs.1 lakh towards cash content will be presented at the award presentation function which will be held at a later date.
Goreti Venkanna became popular with his song “Palle Kanneru Peduthundo” in Kubusam Telugu movie. Another song of Venkanna ‘Galli Chinnadi….’ also became popular among people.
Venkanna, born in 1963, belongs to Gowraram village in Nagarkurnool district. He wrote the lyrics for the Telugu movie – Batukamma.
He got Kaloji Narayana Rao award from Telangana government in 2016 and Kala Ratna or Hamsa award for literature from the State government in undivided Andhra Pradesh. He was elected as MLC in November 2020.
Venkanna spent most of his childhood in singing native folk songs describing the lives of peasants of Telangana.
