Nalgonda: Former MLA and veteran communist leader Mallu Swarajam died due to lungs infection while undergoing a treatment in a private hospital at Hyderabad. She was 91.
She had admitted in Care hospital at Hyderabad on March 2.
As candidate of CPI(M), she had elected to Legislative Assembly of united Andhra Pradesh from Thungathurthy Assembly constituency for two terms ie in 1978 and 1983 elections.
Born into a semi-feudal family in Suryapet district in 1931, she had attracted towards communism with the inspiration got after reading a novel Mother written by Maxim Gorky at her age of 10 years. Swarajyam was born into a semi-feudal family in Karvirala Kothagudem village of Thungathurthy mandal in Suryapet district.
Her stint in public life began at the age of 11 with participating in movement of Andhra Mahasabha to end bonded labour. She had emerged as commander of a dalam fighting against Zamindars and carried a prize of Rs.10,000 for her head during that time.
The fierce revolutionary was once known for fiery speeches. The song “Vooyyallo” written by her praising martyrs of Telangana armed struggle was inspired several people to participate in the fight against Zamindars and razakars during Nizam rule. Swarajyam, at the age of 16 years, had picked up gun to fight against land lords.
She was sister of former MP and leader of Telangana armged struggle late Bheemreddy Narsimha Reddy.
The final rites of Mallu Swarajyam would be conducted at Nalgonda after placing her mortal remains in CPI(M) office for public view, according to the party district secretary Mudireddy Sudhakar Reddy.
