Hamirpur (HP): The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Saturday sent a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, demanding stricter laws to curb alleged religious conversions and ‘love jihad’.

Speaking to reporters, VHP state joint secretary Pankaj Bhaartiya expressed concern over what he termed a rise in such incidents and demanded stricter legislation.

He alleged that incidents of religious conversion and ‘love jihad’ involving Hindu women were being reported even in the corporate and commercial sectors.

“Recent incidents surrounding prestigious institutions in Nashik clearly demonstrate that the web of ‘love jihad’ has now spread to the educated community and commercial sectors,” he said.

He further alleged encroachment on forest, public and railway land in various parts of the country, terming it a threat to national security and claimed that incidents of food contamination were being carried out to create social discord.

Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal leaders in Hamirpur said that their organisation is committed to maintaining the unity and integrity of the nation, and demanding action against those involved in such activities.

A memorandum in this regard was also submitted by VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders to Deputy Commissioner Hamirpur Gandharva Rathore, officials said.

The term ‘love jihad’ has been used by right-wing organisations to allege a conspiracy involving forced religious conversions through interfaith relationships.
