Hyderabad: Hyderabad suffered their first loss in three matches when they went down to Saurashtra by seven wickets in the Elite Group C match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Mohali on Saturday.
Asked to bat first, Hyderabad batters had no answers to a disciplined bowling attack, led by Prerak Mankad (4/54). The Tanmay-led side was all out for 221 in 49 overs. Later, Saurashtra rode on an unbeaten 101 from Harvid Desai to cross in the line in 39 overs with seven wickets in hand. Sheldon Jackson (65) and Prerak Mankad (49) contributed with the bat.
Earlier, Hyderabad batters got starts but could not convert them. After losing captain Tanmay Agarwal in the third over, last match centurion Thakur Tilak Varma and debutant Abhirath Reddy, who replaced P Akshath Reddy, added 48 runs for the second wicket before the former was dismissed by Mankad. Abhirath and Rahul Buddi too returned to the pavilion in quick succession.
Experienced wicketkeeper Kolla Sumanth (32) and all-rounder T Ravi Teja (63 off 86, 6×4, 1×6) revived the innings with a 76-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The departure of Sumanth pushed Hyderabad in trouble again. After Ravi Teja’s departure at the team score of 176, Tanay Thyagarajan and CV Milind helped Hyderabad past 200-run mark.
Kartikeya Kak provided an early breakthrough when he dismissed opener Snell Patel on the fourth ball of the innings but other opener Desai and Sheldon Jackson added 113 runs for the second wicket before the latter departed. Desai, with the help of Mankad, stitched another big partnership of 87 for the second wicket to see his side home.
