Visakhapatnam: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded a thorough investigation into the accident at Hetero drugs unit in the district and compensation of Rs. One crore to Allada Sairam, 23, who died in the accident on Wednesday.

In a letter addressed to the District Collector here on Thursday, CPI(M) district secretary K. Lokanadham also demanded a job for the family of Sairam and quality medical treatment for the four other workers who were injured in the accident and sought the district administration to take steps to prevent recurrence of such accidents.

“The managements are throwing safety to the winds and employing young workers for meagre wages which is resulting in many accidents. Several workers have lost their lives in such accidents. The officials who raise a lot of dust when the accidents occur, are not taking deterrent action against the managements. Nor do they take any punitive action on failure to follow pollution control norms and safety measures at the factories,” he observed, citing the example of inaction against release of effluents into the sea through pipeline, although the fishermen were protesting it for the past 80 days.
