Hyderabad: Volvo is stepping up its presence in India’s luxury electric vehicle market with the launch of the EX90 SUV at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 1.26 crore. The Swedish carmaker has opened bookings for the six-seater, with deliveries scheduled to commence in January 2027.
The launch also comes with a preview of Volvo’s next potential addition to its Indian electric vehicle portfolio, the ES90 electric sedan. The company has not yet disclosed the sedan’s price or launch schedule.
The EX90 combines a 106 kWh battery, dual-motor all-wheel drive and a technology-led cabin. Volvo claims a driving range of up to 625 km on the WLTP test cycle, placing the SUV among the premium electric offerings targeting buyers seeking long-distance capability and high-end features.
Performance and charging
The EX90’s dual-motor setup produces a claimed 456 hp and 670 Nm of peak torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.5 seconds, according to the company, while its top speed is electronically restricted to 180 kmph.
The vehicle supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW. Volvo’s stated charging time for a 10–80% battery top-up is approximately 22 minutes under suitable conditions.
Six-seat cabin and technology
Based on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the EX90 is positioned as an all-electric counterpart to the combustion-engine XC90. Its six-seat layout features second-row captain’s chairs, prioritising individual passenger space and comfort.
The cabin includes a 14.5-inch central touchscreen with Google built-in, a 9-inch driver display and a head-up display. A 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, four-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera and active air suspension are among its key features.
Safety equipment includes nine airbags and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) supported by NVIDIA and Qualcomm Snapdragon hardware. The systems are intended to assist the driver and improve occupant protection.
Competition and next launch
The EX90 will compete in India’s premium electric SUV market with offerings such as the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Kia EV9. Its six-seat configuration and emphasis on cabin technology are central to its positioning in the segment.
Volvo has offered only a preview of the ES90 electric sedan for now. Details on its specifications, pricing and Indian launch timeline are yet to be announced.
