Wanaparthy: Farmers face non-bailable cases for opening Jurala gates to save crops

Amarchinta Police have reportedly registered non-bailable cases against farmers and some political leaders for allegedly releasing water into the Jurala Left Canal without official permission to save standing crops. The action follows a complaint by irrigation officials and comes amid political support extended to the protesting farmers by the BRS.

Wanaparthy: The Amarchinta Police have booked non-bailable cases against farmers who released water into the Jurala Left Canal last month to save their standing crops, reports said.

Irked over the official apathy in releasing water into the canal, a few farmers released water from the Jurala project on September 19. The farmers had repeatedly appealed to irrigation officials to release water to save their crops.

The farmers staged protests on the day, demanding the release of water. As there was no response from the officials, a few farmers opened the gates and released water into the Left Canal in the evening.

The issue took a political turn after the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) extended support to the farmers.

It is now learnt that the Amarchinta Police have registered non-bailable cases against a few farmers and political leaders following a complaint lodged by irrigation officials.

Details of the cases and the number of farmers against whom the cases have been registered are awaited.
