Warangal among 10 Smart Cities under ‘Nurturing Neighbourhood Challenge’

Warangal: The historic Warangal city has been selected is among the 10 Smart Cities selected under “Nurturing Neighbourhood Challenge (NNC)” that is based on making urban public spaces friendly for the 0-5 age group children, among 63 cities.
The Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), announced 10 winning cities for the NNC in collaboration with the Bernard van Leer Foundation (BvLF) and technical partner World Resources Institute (WRI) India on Monday.
The challenge is a three-year phased initiative. While Bengaluru topped the list, Warangal made it into the list by securing the 10th position.
The finalists were selected following a comprehensive evaluation by a jury of representatives from MoHUA, BvLF, and independent experts in the fields of urban design, early childhood development, and behavioural change.
In a tweet, Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar expressed his delight over the achievement and congratulated GWMC Commissioner for the success. “Warangal is selected as one among 10 Smart cities under “Nurturing Neighbourhood challenge” based on making urban public spaces friendly for 0-5 age group. These cities will scale up infant, toddler, caregiver friendly neighbourhood interventions. Well done @MC_GWMC @KTRTRS (SIC),” he said.

For this challenge, Warangal improved play spaces in an Anganwadi and provided safer access to it by enhancing pedestrian infrastructure along streets and junctions in the area.
While NNC focuses on providing facilities for Infants Toddlers and Caregivers (ITC) and aims to make the neighbourhood friendly and safe, 63 cities submitted their proposals which mainly comprised identifying the neighbourhoods and project components, conducting surveys, the funding plan and allocation of funds for the works.
Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) under the Smart City Mission had submitted proposal of revamping the Aganwadi which is located beside Sridevi Mall in Hanmakonda. It also improved the Road Safety for ITC by providing footpaths, Signage’s, children interactive games along the road connecting the Children’s Park, providing play equipment at Pet Park located at Balasamudram.
In February 2021, GWMC was selected in the top 25 Cities among the 63 Cities which had submitted their proposals. In Stage I Competition, Only top 10 Cities will be selected among the 25 shortlisted in the early stage competition. In Stage I competition all Cities are scored basis on completion of the Nurturing Neighbourhood works which were identified initially within the stipulated timelines, testimonials from the end users, pitch presentation and scale up plan.On October 02, 2021, the “Children Cycling and Walking” Event was conducted at Anganwadi centre located at Balasamudram under GWMC limits. Under the Nurturing Neighbourhood Challenge, GWMC had also improved safety at Junctions by providing Zebra Crossings and held other events which included Kids Walk and Cycle, Painting Competition for Kids , Zumba Dance, Signage and Art Work at the Aganwadi centre.
Around 50 Children aged between 3-9 years-old have participated in the event. The kids walked 1.5 km distance (to and fro) Aganwadi to Children’s park holding the National Flag. The Kids have also participated in Painting activities at Aganwadi and cultural activities at Children’s Park.
GWMC Commissioner P Pravinya, said that as a part of the ‘scale up plan’, GWMC aims to improve neighbourhoods and make them safe and friendly to infants, toddlers and care givers. “To show case works under the Scale Up Plan, GWMC is planning to develop a micro park at MH Nagar and Improve facilities at the Park located in Christian Colony by the end of Feb 2022,” she added.
Mayor Gundu Sudharani has appreciated GWMC commissioner and other staff for securing a place in the list of top ten cities in the NNC. “I am happy that GWMC was selected among the top ten cities in the NNC initiated by the MoHUA in 2020. I appreciate the GWMC staff for this success,” she added.
