Warangal Urban:  A 24-year-old man was sentenced to death on Wednesday by the district judge in the sensational Gorrekunta mass murder case in which nine persons were drugged and dumped into well in May last. Incidentally, the killer Sanjay Kumar Yadav hurled the unconscious persons into the well, just to cover up the killing of a woman, a relative of all the nine victims, which included a three-year-old boy.

The macabre murders created quite a sensation and the law enforcement agencies nabbed him four days later on May 25 and investigators indeed struggled to establish the link between the killer and the murders using scientific tools of investigation and painstaking inquiries. And within five months, the killer has been convicted and sentenced to death by the First Additional District Sessions Judge in Warangal K Jayakumar.

The convicted man, was however, given an option to move the High Court against the capital punishment given to him.

The judge said that the prosecution succeeded in proving the guilt of the accused for under sections 449, 328, 380, 404 and 302 of the IPC.

The police investigators established that all the nine victims were rendered unconscious after being made to eat food laced with sedatives and then dumped into the well in Gorrekunta village of Geesukonda mandal on May 21. While the bodies of four members of Md Maqsood’s family were found on May 21, the other five bodies – that of Maqsood, two Bihari youths and one Md Shakeel were found on the next day.

Investigators completed the investigation in a record time and filed a 475 page charge sheet on July 28. The court had examined 67 witnesses in the case and the trial was completed in 36 days of the chargesheet being filed.

The prosecution case was that Sanjay had a live-in relationship with Rafiqa (37), a relative of Maqbool. As she began to insist on marrying him, Sanjay took her in a train and throttled her to death on March 6. Her body was fumped near Nidubrolu in Tadepally railaway station limits of West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Sanjay returned to his work place and Rafiqa’s relatives began questioning him about her missing. Police said Sanjay came to Warangal six years ago in search of livelihood. He found a job in a gunny bags repair unit near Mills Colony area.

He developed close contacts with family members of Maqsood, who was also working there. He had an intimate relationship with Rafiqa, a niece of Maqsood’s wife Nisha, who was estranged with her husband and was living with with Maqsood’s family.

Incidentally, the Judge K Jaya Kumar,  who was also judge of the POCSO special court, also gave death penalty to the accused of rape and murder of a nine-month-old in August, 2019, within a record 48 days since the crime.
