Warangal Rural: Wardhannapet police arrested a man for snatching a bag containing gold ornaments worth Rs 3.50 lakh from a jewellery shop worker on Saturday. The arrested was identified as Banoth Venkatesh of Ganesh Pahad village of Dameracharla mandal in Nalgonda district.
Disclosing details at a press conference here on Sunday, Warangal Police Commissioner Tarun Joshi said Venkatesh, wearing army fatigues, posed as a policeman and accosted Harishankar, the shop worker, at Jayaram Thanda crossroads. He snatched the bag from Harishankar and escaped from the spot.
The accused also took away Harishankar’s mobile phone, and later threw it into the SRSP canal. He committed the offence to flash the money and impress his girl friend in Nekkonda, the CP said, adding that Venkatesh was selected for the BSF in 2018, but left the force in the middle of the training. “Later, he tried to join the police department as a constable and also took coaching at Dilsuknagar, and fell in love with a woman working in a fancy shop,” Joshi added.
Based on a complaint lodged by Harishankar, Wardhannapet police led by Inspector D Vishweshwar managed to nab the accused within a short time with the help of CCTV footage and other evidence. The police also seized a two-wheeler he used to escape. West Zone incharge DCP Venkatalakshmi, Wardhannapet ACP Ramesh, Inspector D Vishweshwar, SI Vamshi Krishna, Zaffergadh SI Kishor and others were present at the press meet.
