Warangal Urban: Much to the delight of athletes from Warangal city, the synthetic track laid at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium grounds in Hanamkonda is nearing completion and will be ready for inauguration soon. The synthetic track is essential for athletes aspiring to avail professional training and participate in State-level as well as national-level meets.
The construction of a 400-meter eight-lane synthetic track complying fully with the requirements of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) at the JNS has begun in 2018 after the Centre sanctioned Rs 7 crore under Khelo India, a scheme aimed at sports development. It has also asked that an excess amount of about Rs 89 lakh could be met by the Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS).
Speaking to Telangana Today, Government Chief Whip and Warangal West MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar said the works of the synthetic track had been almost completed. “Due to the efforts of the State Planning Commission vice-chairperson B Vinod Kumar, the Central government sanctioned the funds for the synthetic track,” Vinay Bhaskar added.
Telangana Athletics Association General Secretary K Sarangapani said that installation of the synthetic track would be very much useful for the athletes, who have been finding it difficult to adapt to the synthetic track whenever they participate in the State and national level meets.
“We must thank Vinod Kumar, former IAS officer B Papa Rao and Khelo India Director Chandrashekhar Rao for their efforts in getting the track sanctioned,” he said adding that they were trying to inaugurate the track by conducting an international event.\
Meanwhile, District Youth and Sports Officer Guguloth Ashok Kumar said that they were going to call for tenders for the construction of a six-lane warm-up track at a length of 120 metres with an estimated cost of Rs 86 lakh soon.
