Hyderabad: It was an exciting experience for Jathin Reddy to board the C-17 military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force from Hungary to Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Reddy, a resident of Malkajgiri, was one among several students who reached Ghaziabad on Thursday in the IAF aircraft as part of Operation Ganga for evacuating stranded Indian nationals from Ukraine. Later in the day, he reached Hyderabad by flight.
“We were excited to board the IAF aircraft,” Reddy shared.
Taking advantage of daytime, Reddy, a fourth-year student of Bogomolets National Medical University in Kyiv along with his friends made their way out of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine even when it was being pounded with bombs by the Russian forces, mostly during the night.
With the Ukrainian government relaxing curfew on February 27, Reddy had to shell out exorbitant charges towards the cab to reach the railway station to board a train for Lviv.
“Not much of bombing took place during the day. So, we decided to leave the country before things got worse. As there were rumours of people being badly treated at the Ukrainian border with Poland, we moved to the border with Hungary. Civilians in Khust provided us food,” said Reddy.
After changing a couple of trains, Reddy along with his friends reached the Ukrainian border with Hungary. With support from the Indian Embassy officials, they made their way into Hungary.
“Upon entering Hungary, everything went smoothly. Though there was a delay in getting accommodation, the hotel and food was good,” he shared.
