Hyderabad: He is a doctor by profession but Dr Krishna Reddy is also a black belt holder in karate. On Sunday, celebrating 75 years of the country’s independence, Reddy celebrated his 70th year birthday by performing a unique feat when he broke 70 granite slabs with his left leg in three minutes and 20 seconds at GVR Karate Academy in Narayanaguda on Sunday.

“I wanted to convey the message that fitness is the key to good health. The common notion among people is that once you reach 60 years there is a sense of resignation with `I have nothing to do attitude.’ In the process, they neglect health and keep themselves idle. As a doctor I have observed many going into depression. This is something alarming and negative picture is creeping into their minds,’’ said Reddy, who runs a nursing home at Saidabad.

Life doesn’t end at 60 as many think and this something has taken a toll in the health of many people. “Now with Covid-19, this has been noticed among senior citizens. This Covid-19 virus has created fear among the senior citizens as they feel could contact the disease. If you follow simple protocols like mask and hand wash, it is easy to be away from the virus. There is sheer psychology fear among people. This has to go. Keeping this in view I wanted to allay these fears by demonstrating this feat at that even at 70 years that life can be full of energy and activity,’’ he said.

In fact, Reddy at the age of 48 got into karate and within few years he got the black belt. “I was little bit late entrant to the martial arts. But thanks to my instructor Gopal Reddy, I began to enjoy karate and practice over 90 minutes. I advise the senior citizen to get into some activity which keeps you busy, either it could be yoga, meditation, walking, jogging or any other exercises. I will continue to convince people to enjoy life after 60 years,’’ said Reddy.
