Hanamkonda: Mothers with newborn babies in the Government Maternity Hospital at Hanamkonda spend sleepless nights, fearing that rats might bite their babies. Their fears are not without reason. Rats keep scurrying all across the ward, even in the day, in the hospital.

On Tuesday, the rodent menace in the government hospital became a hot topic on the internet, after a video showing rats roaming in the maternity ward of the hospital went viral on social media. In the video, the rats could also be seen feeding on the leftover food in a ward in the presence of patients. Several women were worried about their newborn babies as the rodents were roaming in the ward and creating fear among the patients.

“I saw rats inside the ward. We are worried about the risk infants face. During nights, we stay outside the ward, and notice huge rats,” said an attendant.

Sources say the issue was brought to the notice of the hospital authorities, but no steps were taken to get rid of the rats. However, the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) claimed that there were no rodents inside the maternity wards, though the official admitted that they were present outside the wards. The RMO further claimed that the hospital was taking measures to keep the rodents out of the hospital and that pest control was being done on a regular basis.

Two years ago, a patient P Srinivas, died of rat bites in the MGM hospital in the city. He was admitted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU), and while undergoing treatment, the rodents bit him. After the rodent incident, the MGM Hospital authorities shifted the patient to NIMS, Hyderabad, for better treatment, but he died while undergoing treatment.
