Scientists have successfully used cloud seeding technology to create fake rain in the desert country.
After suffering under stifling hot conditions due to temperatures of 120 degree Fahrenheit, it’s finally raining in the UAE. Scientists have successfully used cloud seeding technology to create fake rain in the desert country.
Using drones, the National Centre for Meteorology is releasing electric charges into the clouds that make them merge with each other and lead to rain. The operation led to heavy rainfall across the country that usually receives only 100 mm rainfall every year. The NCM has conducted 126 such experiments of cloud seeding this year.
The innovative technology uses electricity rather than chemicals like silver iodine to do this, making it a much safer option. The success of the cloud seeding operations means it could be used for mitigating the effects of droughts in other countries in future. It also brings some hope for the UAE’s sinking water table which is a source of its fresh water supply. The country has reportedly invested over $15 million in nine projects to increase rainfall in the region.
