Medak: The villagers of Marpally in Regode mandal risked their lives to perform the funeral of a youth on Wednesday, crossing the Gollavagu stream which was in spate due to heavy rains.
Bandi Harikrishna (22), a physically challenged man, had died of a heart attack on Tuesday night. While his family was preparing for the funeral, the downpour caused the stream to swell, cutting off access to the burial ground on the other side.
The villagers initially waited for hours hoping the waters would recede, but the flow only increased. They eventually used a JCB and a tractor to cross the flood. The body was transported on the JCB, while close relatives crossed in a tractor. Some youngsters tied ropes and waded through the strong currents to make it across.
The funeral rituals were completed by Wednesday evening.
