Sangareddy: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to reduce water supply to the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Ordnance Factory (ODF) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) by 20 to 50 per cent shortly, owing to the shortage of water in the Singur reservoir.
The HMWSSB, which draws water from Singur, supplies these organisations as well as parts of Hyderabad. Sources in the HMWSSB told Telangana Today that the board had asked these organisations to make alternative arrangements to meet their water requirements until next June, when fresh inflows into Singur are expected.
The reservoir currently holds just 3.70 TMCft of water, against its full storage capacity of 29.91 TMCft. Singur irrigation officials released 0.150 TMCft of water into the Manjeera to meet immediate drinking water needs. The Manjeera reservoir currently holds just 0.200 TMCft of water.
Although officials declined to provide complete details of water supplies to beer companies in Sangareddy, sources said supplies to beverage companies had been gradually restricted.
However, officials were still supplying 5,000 litres of water to one particular beverage company on Monday. They had also recently stopped supplying water to chemical companies because of the shortage of water in the reservoirs.
The situation is likely to worsen in the coming days, with the Singur reservoir expected to run dry within a month.
