Hyderabad: Scarcity and lack of drinking water for people living outside Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and within Outer Ring Road (ORR) jurisdiction will soon be a thing of the past.

By the year-end, around 20 lakh people living in these areas will be supplied potable drinking water on par with those staying in the city under the HMWS&SB ORR Project Phase-II. The project is being taken up as scores of housing societies, colonies and multistoried buildings have come up in localities where Phase-II works are underway.

HMWS&SB had already implemented ORR project Phase-I successfully and provided water to 190 villages situated beyond GHMC and within ORR limits at a cost of Rs 756.56 crore. However, given the city’s massive growth in these areas, the Phase-II works were proposed.

The State government has already accorded an administrative sanction of Rs 1,200 crore and works are underway at a brisk pace. Plans are underway to supply drinking water to 272 colonies by March and complete the Phase-II works by December.

Under this project, around two lakh water connections will be provided and every house in the Urban Local Bodies (UBLs) and Gram panchayats within the ORR will have a water connection. According to HMWS&SB, besides providing potable drinking water to 20 lakh persons, the project will also ensure stabilisation of supplies to the existing 1.5 lakh water connections.

Construction of storage reservoirs with 137 million litres (ML) capacity and laying of pipeline network for a length of 2,093 km will take up under this project. Other works include the construction of chlorination rooms and pumping stations. Providing house service connections to the BPL families is also part of the HMWS&SB ORR Project Phase-II.
