Sangareddy:Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) MP from Kollam, NK Premachandran, on Thursday said the recent Wayanad disaster was a man-made one because the government could not rehabilitate the two villages though they knew that the two villages were prone to landslides.
The Kollam MP, who was addressing GITAM deemed to be Unversity Hyderabad students at Rudraram in Sangareddy district on Thursday, said expert reports had alerted the government on the possibility of landslides here five years ago when another landslide occurred just five km away from Wayanad. He underlined the importance of governments taking environmental conservation, ecology and combating climate change on priority, to avoid the repetition of such incidents in any parts of the country. However, he said they saw no such commitment from the government side because they faced challenges from industries.
Premachandran observed that many destructions have resulted in India in the name of development. The Kollam MP observed the victims of the development in India were marginalised communities. The RSP MP appealed to the younger and more educated generation to enter into active politics to bring a change in society.
Vishakapatnam MP and President of GITAM University Sribharath Mathukumalli also spoke.
