Hyderabad: Questions on safety while riding superbikes are being raised in the wake of Sai Dharam Tej’s accident.
Though the actor was wearing a helmet that apparently saved his life, the impact of the crash was grave as he was found unconscious by the passersby and the emergency staff. This could have probably been avoided by taking a few more safety measures.
Riding with proper safety gear becomes important while riding motorcycles with higher displacements, though safety features on these bikes are better than the ones on smaller bikes. Any crash involving these bikes could turn fatal owing to the weight and power of these machines.
First things first, wear a helmet, especially those with ISI certification. Gloves become the second important layer of protection after helmets as riders are likely to stop the impact of crashing into the ground by pushing their hands forward. Gloves with knuckle protection and padding on palms will help reduce the impact.
One should always wear jackets designed specifically for riding. These jackets come with shoulder and elbow guards. Some jackets also come with chest and back armours which will protect from shocks due to impacts. One can also buy torso armours separately, which can be worn under the jackets.
Knee and shin guards also come in handy as they protect riders from scratching, fracturing or dislocating bones. Boots with thick soles and toe protectors give riders a good road grip. These are some of the essentials while riding, not only superbikes, but also smaller ones.
Suitable for highways
Sai Dharam Tej was driving a high-powered Triumph Street Triple RS. Priced at over Rs 11.3 lakh, the motorcycle comes with a 765 cc engine with a 6-speed gearbox and is among the faster bikes that are available in Indian market. With its high displacement and 5 riding modes, the bike is more suitable for highways than city roads.
Though the bike comes with safety features like ABS, maneuverability of the bike on city roads is quite difficult.
