Hyderabad: WhatsApp has announced the launch of Writing Help, a new AI-powered feature designed to help users refine their messages while keeping conversations private.
The feature, built on Meta’s Private Processing technology, allows users to draft a message and choose from AI-generated suggestions in different tones, such as professional, funny, or supportive. Users can then select, edit, or send the rewritten message. Writing Help can be accessed via a new pencil icon in 1:1 or group chats.
Addressing privacy concerns, WhatsApp said that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read user messages or the suggested rewrites. The company emphasised that Private Processing ensures the content stays on the device while leveraging AI to generate responses.
For those seeking technical details, Meta has published an engineering blog and a white paper explaining the architecture. Independent audits from cybersecurity firms NCC Group and Trail of Bits have also validated the system’s security measures.
WhatsApp stressed that Private Processing features like Writing Help and Message Summaries are optional and turned off by default.
The rollout has begun in English, starting with users in the United States and several other countries. The company plans to expand to more languages and regions later this year.
