When Sundar did not have white pads
“We tried many but they were too small for the tall Sundar. We tried getting from the Aussies but due to Covid they could not spare their pads. Finally, we had to go to a shop after the Test match had started,’’ he said.
Hyderabad: Coach Ramakrishna Sridhar said there were many interesting and tense incidents that happened during this eventful tour of Australia.
For instance Washington Sundar did not have white pads as he was only part of the T20 team and was a net bowler. Whenever he batted he did with blue pads. When he was a surprise selection for the Brisbane Test, there were no white pads.
“We tried many but they were too small for the tall Sundar. We tried getting from the Aussies but due to Covid they could not spare their pads. Finally, we had to go to a shop after the Test match had started,’’ he said.
The decision to play Sundar was a masterstroke by coach Ravi Shastri. “Having known Washington, his ability to bowl well and being a left-handed batsman, we thought it would be an ideal replacement for Jadeja. Being tall, his off spin would be ideal on the bouncy track of Brisbane. A finger spinner would also give more control than wrist spinner. He got that pace to extract the bounce.’’
