When Vijay Deverakonda turns a ‘Liger’

The actor talks about his experiences of working on the film, co-star Ananya, boxing legend Mike Tyson and his body transformation

Hyderabad: When we talk about the most happening star in the Telugu film industry of the present generation, it’s hard not to think of Vijay Deverakonda. The actor made it big on-screen without a film background and is continuing to charm audiences across the country.

During an exclusive tête-à-tête with ‘Telangana Today’, the South superstar got candid about his pan-India film ‘Liger’, working with the legendary Mike Tyson and how Ananya Pandey is a “great co-star”. He also got super open about his physique. Excerpts:

How was your experience working with Mike Tyson?
Having Mike Tyson on board is like a dream come true. He was exactly what we needed for this particular role in the film. When we narrated the film and sent him the script, he was really excited and got on-board. I’m really looking forward to shooting with him. Different roles like these excite me more because they are challenging.

What kind of a co-star is Ananya Pandey?

Tell us about your experience working with her.She’s a great co-star and she’s done a splendid job in the film. Everyone is going to love her performance when they watch ‘Liger’.

Tell us about your preparation for your physique for ‘Liger’?
‘Liger’ has been one of my most challenging films. It has been an intense workout schedule, and my body is no more like it used to be; it is now a body of a fighter. The regimen has now become a part of my lifestyle and I’m enjoying it. I’ve been dedicated to this film for about two years. I wanted to do it the second I heard the story and I decided that I wanted India to see the best version of this story possible. When I take something on, I go all in and that is exactly what I have done with this film too.

What are the kinds of roles you look forward to taking up in the future?
I’m in a place in my career where the options are immense and I get the chance to choose from a wide range of scripts, directors, and languages. There is a lot of variety because of this. I pick my role basis whatever excites me the most at the time.

Tell us about your association with BREEZER Vivid Shuffle?
My association with BREEZER Vivid Shuffle started last year in their 4th season. The platform has embodied the Voice Of The Streets, giving all hip-hop art forms a voice and a platform to showcase their talent on, and go on to build a career. BREEZER Vivid Shuffle Season 5 aims to take hip-hop to the mainstream audience, throwing light on, and growing the community.

Do you listen to hip-hop? Who are your favorite artistes?
Hip-hop is an integral part of my life. It’s a part of daily workouts. If I need some motivational kick, I always rely on hip-hop so it is an integral part of my life. When BREEZER Vivid Shuffle came along last year, I was extremely excited to join hands with India’s biggest hip-hop league. I got the chance to see unique talent from across the country. I am so happy to continue my association with them and take hip-hop mainstream; not just hip-hop music, but also dance, art, fashion, culture, and more. Some of my favourite artistes are Eminem, Kanye, and Pop Smoke.
