Ever noticed how a cold drink feels ten times better in the heat? There is a reason for that.
There is something about summer that makes cold drinks feel extra satisfying. Whether it is iced coffee, chilled juices or fizzy sodas, the craving for something cold naturally increases as temperatures rise. What feels like a simple preference is actually a mix of how our body reacts to heat and how our mind associates comfort with certain habits.
In hot weather, the body constantly works to regulate its temperature. Sweating leads to fluid loss, and as a result, we instinctively reach for something that feels cooling and refreshing. Cold drinks provide instant relief, helping to lower body temperature and offering a soothing sensation, especially after spending time outdoors.
“Cold drinks feel more refreshing in summer because the body is actively trying to cool itself down. Lower temperatures provide quick relief, especially when the body is overheated or dehydrated,” says nutritionist Ritu Sharma.
There is also a strong psychological element. Cold beverages are often linked to comfort during summer, from childhood memories of ice creams to that first sip of a chilled drink after being out in the sun. These associations make them feel even more enjoyable and satisfying.
Temperature also affects how we experience taste. Colder drinks tend to feel sharper and more refreshing, particularly when the body is overheated or slightly dehydrated. This enhances the overall experience, making them more appealing than room temperature options.
“However, while cold drinks feel great in the moment, it is important to be mindful of your choices. Sugary or excessively chilled beverages may not always be the best for hydration. Opting for healthier options like chilled water, coconut water or fresh juices can offer both refreshment and nourishment,” she adds.
