Hyderabad: Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Sunday assured that he would strive to get journalists declared as Covid-19 frontline warriors.

Putting their lives at risk, the journalists discharged their duty during pandemic, he said, participating as a chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the two-day national executive meeting of Indian Journalists Union here.

“I will bring to the notice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi the issues discussed at this meeting and strive to declare journalists as frontline warriors,” he said. Reddy recalled as to how many journalists came along with him in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospitals for coverage when Covid reached at its peak.

With the rise in social media network, false news was making rounds on certain occasions, he said, adding that news should be treated as news only. He said the Central government was taking necessary steps for the development of north-eastern States.

The union passed a resolution demanding that the Central and State governments protect bereaved family members of 600 journalists, who died across the country due to Covid, by extending financial assistance to them.

In another resolution, the union demanded compensation to the family members of five journalists, who were murdered in different States this year. The union demanded to continue the existing Working Journalists Act till a new Act is enforced.
