Hyderabad: Comfort clothing has never been in fashion like this before. Ever since the pandemic struck humankind, it’s been all about staying comfortable when it comes to working, eating, hanging out, or even fashion.
While sweatpants, athleisure, tie-dye, and oversized clothes were the biggest fashion hits during Covid, crochet is trending right now. It’s safe to say that crochet is not just for grandmas anymore! Or just limited to women! Boys, time to fill your wardrobe with some crochet.
In Hollywood, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Kourtney Kardashian, Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, Justin Bieber, and Shawn Mendes were spotted hitting the town in fashionable crochet outfits. At this year’s Tokyo Olympics, we even saw British diver Tom Daley always knitting crochet outfits in the stands.
Meanwhile, Bollywood stars such as Tanishaa Mukerji, Shraddha Kapoor, Mouni Roy, and Esha Gupta have been stepping out in crochet outfits like never before.
Celebrity designer Nachiket Barve, who has worked with stars like Kriti Sanon and Sara Ali Khan, says, “With the world going through a pandemic for almost two years now, people have begun finding comfort in nostalgia. There has also been time for people to indulge in arts and crafts – doing crochet is very meditative. From making banana bread to doing DIY of some kind, people have more time on their hands.”
On how to style crochet, Nachiket adds, “The idea is to not look like a tea cosy from your granny’s time! Wear a crochet scarf over your outfit or go for a sari with a crochet border. Also, do it tonal and in softer colours. Stay away from brighter colours unless you can wear it confidently.”
Crochet is not just about sweaters anymore. You will easily spot fashionistas wearing crochet bikinis, dresses, hats, shorts, handbags, jackets, and shirts. “Crochet is apt for resort wear. If you’re going to the beach, crochet is the option for celebs like Shraddha Kapoor (who wore a crochet crop top at the Maldives). Style yourself in crochet shrugs or shorts, but it’s all about how you carry it. Since it’s monsoon now, you never know when it’s going to rain or get sunny, so crochet is quite apt,” says celeb designer Althea Krishna.
Even at New York Fashion Week Spring 2022, knitted clothes have been trending majorly!
