Karimnagar: A woman, Gandrakota Pavani, on Tuesday attempted suicide in front of the Huzurabad police station, protesting alleged police negligence in delivering justice to her.
Pavani tried to end her life by dousing herself with diesel. However, alert police personnel foiled the attempt.
A native of Thigaram village in Station Ghanpur mandal of Jangaon district, Pavani married Kanchapu Aravind of Rampur in Huzurabad mandal two years ago. A few days after the marriage, she lodged a complaint against her husband, alleging that Aravind began harassing her for additional dowry. Police subsequently registered a dowry harassment case against him.
Later, Pavani and Aravind obtained a divorce through a community elders’ panchayat. At the time of the divorce, Aravind had reportedly promised to pay Rs.9 lakh as compensation to Pavani.
As the compensation amount was not paid, Pavani approached the police. Despite making several rounds of the police station over the past few months, she alleged that no action was taken. On Tuesday, she again approached the police along with her parents. As there was no response, she staged protest demonstrations at the police station and later at Ambedkar Chowk.
Agitated over what she described as the negligent attitude of the police, Pavani attempted to end her life by dousing herself with diesel. Alert police personnel prevented the act and escorted her inside the police station.
