Palnadu (Andhra Pradesh): A 32-year-old woman working as outsourced staff in a government department was allegedly raped and assaulted by an unidentified person at Macherla here, a police official said on Saturday.

Palnadu district Superintendent of Police (SP) B Krishna Rao said the woman was staying alone at her house. The unidentified person knocked on the door at 4 pm on April 2 under the pretext of asking for a glass of drinking water. He later forcefully barged into the house and raped her.

According to police, the woman was living alone in Macherla after separating from her husband, while her daughter was staying with her grandparents.

The SP said a rape case has been registered and investigation is on.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed police to immediately arrest the culprit who raped the woman working as a subordinate in the Panchayat Raj Department, an official release said.

Officials informed the CM that the woman was shifted to Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) for medical tests.

The CM was apprised that teams headed by an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) are on the hunt for the rapist, and that they have already detained a few suspects.

Naidu called for stringent punishment to set an example that crimes against women would not be tolerated, the release said.
