Women to rule at Osmania University Convocation
With 68 gold medals to their names, they outnumber men

Hyderabad: Women will go home with most of the gold medals at the 81st convocation of the Osmania University (OU), which is scheduled to be held here on Wednesday. Out of the 80 gold medals to be awarded to meritorious students during the convocation, 68 will go to women while the men could get just 12.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, OU Vice Chancellor Prof D Ravinder said Sayabugari Sushanth from Faculty of Science bagged five gold medals in MSc Chemistry, which was the highest for the academic year 2018-19. Similarly for 2019-20, Maheshkar Shubham and Fouziya Unnisa secured four and three gold medals respectively in MSc Chemistry.
According to the V-C, Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, who is also Chancellor of the OU, will participate in the convocation and Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address.
Candidates who passed the exams between July 2018 and June 2020 only were eligible to receive the PhD degrees and gold medals. All the PhD degrees and PG, MPhil and PhD gold medals would be presented during the convocation ceremony, the V-C said, adding that 750 students were eligible for the award of PhD degree during 2018-19 and 2019-20.
Of the 750, 400 candidates had already taken their PhD degrees, while 195 men and 148 women would be awarded their degrees in person during the convocation, Prof Ravinder said.
The UG gold medals will be awarded at the respective colleges after the convocation. The degree certificates of candidates who have passed the UG, PG, Diploma, MPhil programmes in regular mode from the university, affiliated and autonomous colleges will be sent by post. Candidates who cleared their exams through the PGRRCDE will also receive their certificates through post.
Registered PhD degree holders and gold medal awardees should obtain an entry pass by producing receipt of the registration from the Office of the Controller of Examination, OU, on Tuesday. The entry pass and invitation was mandatory to attend the convocation, officials said.
