Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs Tokan Sahu informed Rajya Sabha that so far the Central and State governments have released a combined amount of Rs 1,380.72 crore to Greater Warangal and Karimnagar, which have been selected under the Smart Cities Mission programme in Telangana, of which Rs. 1,252 crore has been utilized.

Replying to a question raised by Congress member Chamala Kiran Kumar, Sahu said 51 projects worth Rs. 512 crore in Warangal and 21 projects worth Rs. 282 crore in Karimnagar sanctioned under the smart city project were going on. In July, the Centre approved the extension of the Smart City Mission till March 2025. The Centre had earlier set June 30, 2024 as the deadline.

Warangal and Karimnagar were selected for the Smart Cities Mission project by the union government in May 2016, a year after the mission’s launch. At the time of this announcement, the BJP led union government had said it wanted to ensure that the selected cities would have internet connectivity, e-governance along with quality infrastructure.

As per the mission’s guidelines, every Smart City is entitled to receive Rs 500 crore from the union government over a period of five years. The state or the urban local body needs to match this with an equal amount.Meanwhile, union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said in reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha that 466 people died in Telangana between 2018-22 due to hailstorms.
