Hyderabad: If social media apps like Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are preferred among the adult population, then for kids it is YouTube. With many children shifting from desktop and laptops to mobile phones, YouTube with its access to videos, music and games has emerged as the most popular Android app among kids.
According to New Kaspersky Safe Kids research, in September, October and November 2021, children across the world — actually, as always — spent most of their time on the YouTube app: 31.42 per cent of the time spent on 10 most popular apps. This was followed by WhatsApp at 19.17 per cent and TikTok at 18.77 per cent share. Apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Netflix constituted 5.21 per cent, 2.45 per cent and 2.15 per cent respectively.
Even on YouTube, children searched the most for video games-related videos which constituted 28.43 per cent of the overall search queries by subject category. Videos related to music constituted 19.14 per cent, YouTube bloggers and Music, cartoons and TV shows constituted 16.29 per cent and 12.07 per cent respectively, the report informs.
In the games category two newcomers hit the top game searches this year – Genshin Impact and Poppy Playtime. Minecraft came in second with 22.4 per cent and additionally, Minecraft’s Let’s Play series turned out to be more popular than Roblox, whose share of requests was 5.9 per cent. Meanwhile, the leading gaming YouTube channels were MrBeast, EdisonPts and Paluten.
The most popular musicians were BTS, BlackPink, Lil Nas X, Ariana Grande and Twice. The most well-known songs were CKay – Love Nwantiti, and two new tracks from one of the BlackPink members, LISA – Lalisa and Money. K-Pop still appeared to be popular among children.
Children were most frequently looking for cartoons – the share of queries was 56.4 per cent. Most kids searched for Peppa Pig and Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. The share of requests for TV shows was 35.3 per cent.
As for search queries related to toys and possible gifts, LEGO and Barbie were the leaders. From the educational sphere, children were most interested in the animal world and experiments in chemistry and physics.
