Visakhapatnam: The privatisation of Visakhapatnam steel plant issue would be raised in the ensuing Parliament session to put pressure on the Centre to drop the move, YSR Congress Party Rajya Sabha member Vijay Sai Reddy said here on Wednesday.

Addressing a media conference after a meeting with steel plant workers along with Tourism minister Avanti Srinivasa Rao, he also announced support for the protests against privatisation to be taken up at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in August. “We will voice our demand with the support of all political parties, including the opposition, in the Parliament for protecting the steel plant. We will also meet the Finance Minister and Steel Minister in the matter. We fully oppose privatisation of the Vizag steel plant and the YSRCP has already adopted a resolution to this effect in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly,” he recalled.

Observing that privatisation of public sector undertakings was not proper, the MP felt that steps should be taken to make loss making units turnaround and make gains. He suggested converting steel plant loans into equity and also allot captive mines to the plant which could enable it get the raw material at a cheaper rate and bring down production costs drastically.

Avanti Srinivasa Rao said it was imprudent to privatise national wealth and the party would bring pressure on the Centre in the Parliament to drop the move.
