Amaravati: A pregnant woman in labour had to walk four kilometres to reach a point where she could board an ambulance to reach the hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district, the main opposition YSR Congress Party said on Wednesday, terming the incident a painful reminder of the hardships faced by people in remote villages of the state.

“Shanthi, a pregnant woman from Tenkabuddi village in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, developed labour pains on Monday night. As there is no proper road to the village, the ambulance could not reach her. With no other option, she had to walk nearly 4 kilometres in the dark with the help of family members carrying torches before reaching a point where an ambulance was waiting,” the YSR Congress posted on X.

The opposition party slammed the coalition government for what it called failure to provide basic infrastructure in remote areas. “This reflects the failure of the TDP-led coalition government under Chandrababu Naidu to provide even basic infrastructure and emergency healthcare in remote areas. Instead of spending huge amounts on publicity and grand cultural programmes during the Bhogapuram International Airport inauguration, including the record-setting Dhimsa performance and Yogandhra event earlier, the government should have first ensured proper roads, ambulance access, and healthcare facilities in the very tribal villages from which many of the participants came,” it said.

Stating that no mother should suffer such misery, the YSRCP demanded accountability and immediate action to provide basic infrastructure to every remote village.

Meanwhile, the YSRCP alleged that the coalition government failed to make security arrangements for former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit to Devarapalli in East Godavari district to meet tobacco farmers who are struggling without a support price.

The YSRCP said that even after receiving prior information, the coalition government failed to make even minimum security arrangements. It said that the lack of adequate police personnel at the helipad shows the negligence.

It alleged that, unable to see huge crowds coming to see Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu was creating problems during his tours.
