Warangal: No fresh cases of lymphatic filariasis also known as filaria have been detected this year in Hanamkonda, Mulugu and Jayashankar Bhupalpally districts which were carved out of the erstwhile Warangal district, according to the medical and health officials.

Dr Madanmohan, incharge Malaria officer said 72 cases were registered in 2017, 29 in 2018, 10 in 2019, and 18 cases were recorded in 2020. “However, there were no cases registered in the newly reorganised Hanammonda district in 2021,” he added. Meanwhile, the District Medical and Health Officers (DMHOs) of the Mulugu and Bhupalpally districts also said that there were no fresh cases this year. “As per our records, there are only 34 filaria cases in the Mulugu district,” DMHO Dr Allam Appaiah told Telangana Today.

According to officials of the Department of Medical and Health, lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a neglected tropical disease, and 14 districts – Asifabad, Khammam, Mancherial, Medak, Sangareddy, Siddipet, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Yadadri, Nirmal, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, Hanamkonda and Warangal districts- were identified as endemic districts of lymphatic filariasis in the State.

When filariasis develops into chronic conditions it leads to lymphoedema (tissue swelling) or elephantiasis (skin/tissue thickening) of limbs and hydrocele (scrotal swelling). The State recorded a total of 66,394 lymphoedema cases and 1,329 hydrocele cases till 2020.
