Warangal: As many as 426 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2021 under the Warangal Police commisisonerate jurisdiction, while 1,110 people sustained injuries in 1,106 accidents despite conducting special awareness drives and taking other steps to check the road accidents.

Rash and negligent driving by the youngsters and wearing no helmets were found to be the main reasons for the increase in the fatal road accidents.

“In 2020, 386 people were killed and 950 people received injuries in 984 accidents. However, the number of the fatal road accidents went up in 2021 by 9.94 per cent,” according to the annual crime report released by the police. The police levied Rs 65.68 lakhs as fines in 11980 drunken driving cases in 2021. The number of people imprisoned for drunk driving stood at 1,365 in the same year. However, the number of the drunken driving reported in 2020 were just 3139, and the amount of fines collected from the vehicle users was also just Rs 25.65 lakh.

Awareness and enforcement

“We are taking all steps to contain road accidents by conducting awareness programmes as well as with the strict enforcement of the laws. The Road Transport Authority (RTA) is also doing its duty to check the road accidents.

Identification of the black spots and setting up the sign boards and other steps for the correction of the road dynamics are also being taken up. But pathetically, many people are losing their precious lives in road accidents,” said an official. He urged people to adhere to traffic rules strictly. Warangal Police Commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi said that they had been strictly enforcing the rule of wearing helmets for motorcyclists since November 1, 2021 with the main objective of ensuring that motorists reach their destination safely.
