Hyderabad: Stop, look and listen before crossing the road might be a popular safety slogan, but just that might not be enough to keep you safe anymore. The number of pedestrians who lost their lives on the roads in Cyberabad indicates that more is needed.

From January this year, till August, 145 pedestrians were killed in the Cyberabad Traffic Police limits alone. Abrupt crossing of the road and jaywalking were not the only reasons, but talking on the phone while walking along the road too was one major reason, according to traffic police officials.

According to the Cyberabad Traffic Police, the analysis of accidents showed reasons including not using the zebra crossing, crossing the roads at poorly illuminated spots and even absentmindedness, with cops saying some victims were apparently lost in thoughts while crossing the road, leading to accidents.
“People should be very alert and sensible on the road to avoid accidents and getting hurt.

They should focus more on the road and traffic signals than on other activities. A majority of accidents are occurring due to human error,” a senior traffic police official said.
With a combination of these reasons leading to an increase in the number of accidents, the police are stressing the need of being alert on the road.

“Do not cross the road abruptly, as that confuses the motorist and they end up hitting you. Wait for the right time and always use a zebra crossing. In case there is no proper marking to cross the road, better stay put and wait until the road is clear,” said G Guruvaiah Goud, Inspector, Cyberabad Traffic, adding that it was equally important to avoid jumping medians.

There are also parents leaving children freely on busy roads, which leads to accidents, he said, pointing out that there was a tendency among pedestrians to think that motorists would slow down or stop for them to cross the roads. “That does not happen always,” Goud said, adding that efforts were on to make motorists also respect pedestrians.

The Cyberabad Traffic Police are making efforts to create awareness among citizens on the Motor Vehicle Act and traffic laws. Traffic police personnel from all the 10 traffic police stations in the Commissionerate are conducting campaigns to educate citizens on traffic safety.
