Hydereabad: With dates to be confirmed for a lot of big games, February offers the best lineup in the early year. Selecting the best upcoming games and key events for 2025 is incredibly difficult, given the sheer number of exciting titles slated for release and the variety of new hardware expected to hit the shelves.
Grand Theft Auto VI, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, Nvidia’s much-leaked RTX 50 series GPUs, and potentially some healthy competition in the handheld gaming segment with the unveiling of the MSI Claw 8 AI are just some of the highlights set to happen in 2025. As we gear up for a year of interesting new releases, let’s take a look at some of 2025’s games that have garnered the most attention through their launch activities.
1. Grand Theft Auto VI (date: TBC, 2025; launching on: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S): It’s been over 11 years since the release of GTA V in September 2013, and players have been eagerly awaiting the next installment in the iconic franchise. Known for their expansive sandbox worlds that allow near-limitless possibilities – and their often- controversial narratives laced with misogyny – GTA V has become one of the best- selling games of all time, with over 200 million copies sold. Scheduled to launch in 2025, most industry watchers are advising caution as Rockstar has historically delayed games. Irrespective of the launch date, GTA VI is the most awaited game of all time.
2. Assassin’s Creed Shadows (14 th Feb 2025; PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Mac, and iPad): An Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan that allows players to experience both the Samurai and Ninja ways of life through the dual protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe–need I say more? Launch content from the game indicates that players will be offered a comprehensive combat system that will be accompanied by a very strong plot and an immersive open Japan, enabling players to find their own paths to becoming the perfect assassin. Shadows is shaping up to be a blockbuster action-adventure perfectly timed for Valentine’s Day weekend.
3. Avowed (18 th Feb 2025; Xbox Series X/S and PC): Set in the fantasy world of Eora (from Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity), Avowed is a new first-person RPG adventure that Microsoft and Obsidian decided to push to 2025 due to an already packed launch calendar in 2024. Expectations for the game are high, thanks to Obsidian’s reputation for crafting exceptional RPG experiences. Launching just four days after Assassin’s Creed, Avowed could offer variety and a change of pace for players seeking a non-stealthy, more magic-focused adventure.
4. Split Fiction (6 th March 2025; PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC): Showcased at the Gane Awards in December, Split Fiction is another co-op two-person adventure from the makers of It Takes Two. Focusing on the life of two storytellers – Mio and Zoe where one writes sci-fi and the other fantasy – who are trapped in their own created worlds and must come together to escape. I am really looking forward to how the magic from It Takes Two is developed further, and this game will be a must play for me in early March.
5. Ghost of Yotei (TBC 2025, PlayStation 5): From the makers of Ghost of Tsushima comes Ghost of Yotei, a samurai adventure set in early 1600s Japan, in the regions surrounding Mount Yotei. Little is known about the game and its female protagonist, Atsu, apart from her preference for dual-wielding katanas and her singular focus on revenge. Expect the game to be both visually spectacular and heavy on combat. Apart from the five games mentioned here, there are also few more notable mentions including The Outer Worlds 2¸ Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and the much-awaited Fable. Also set to launch this year are Borderlands 4 and a multiplayer version of Elden Ring called Nightreign. With a lot of variety on offer, there is enough for all kinds of players in 2025.
