Kothagudem: The district police welcomed the Telugu New Year, Ugadi, on a grand note with the seizure of an enormous quantity of dry ganja on Tuesday.
Chunchupalli police seized a whopping 2200 kg (22 quintals) of ganja being smuggled to Hyderabad and arrested the driver. This is probably the biggest haul of ganja seizure by police in the State, sources said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Dutt giving the details of the case to the media persons informed that the contraband being smuggled in a van was seized during vehicle inspections by Chunchupally Sub-Inspector of Police(SI), B Mahesh and staff at Brundavanam village near Kothagudem.
The value of the seized ganja would be around Rs 3.31 crore. The vehicle driver, Shaik Mahabub, a resident of Toli Chowk in Hyderabad, was arrested and the vehicle was seized. The ganja bags were concealed under empty vegetable trays in the van, the SP informed.
During interrogation, the driver confessed to the police that the substance was being smuggled from Chintoor in East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, to Hyderabad. Efforts were on to nab the other accused involved in the ganja transportation, Dutt said.
A case under Section 8 (c) read with 20 (b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 was booked against the accused and he would be produced before the court for judicial remand, he added.
The SP appreciated the SI, Mahesh and the staff for seizing such a huge quantity of ganja.
