New Delhi: In a significant crackdown against banned Chinese ‘manja’ ahead of Independence Day, 30 rolls of the deadly glass coated kite string have been recovered by Delhi Police and one accused has been arrested, officials said on Saturday.

An official statement said that the crackdown was carried out by a team of the national Capital’s Seelampur Police Station which detected the illegal storage and sale of banned Chinese manja and arrested one accused.

On August 7, HC Roki, along with Ct. Anuj, was conducting routine area patrolling when they received credible secret information regarding a person illegally storing and selling banned Chinese manja near Gali No. 09 of Gautampuri at Delhi’s Seelampur area.

According to officials, the information was promptly conveyed to senior officers, who directed immediate legal action. Acting on the directions, a team carried out a raid at the identified location.

During the operation, one person, identified as 52-year-old Md. Jamir, was apprehended and 30 rolls of banned Chinese manja, bearing the marking ‘Hero Plus – For Industrial Use Only’, were recovered from his possession.

Accordingly, FIR No. 278/2026 dated 07.08.2026 U/S 223(a) BNS was registered at PS Seelampur.

Police have not found any previous criminal record of the accused.

Further investigation in the case is underway.

A few days back, Delhi Police had recovered 384 rolls of the banned product and arrested three persons in separate operations.

Police had said that efforts are underway to trace the suppliers and dismantle the illegal supply network of the banned kite string, which poses a serious risk to humans and birds.

In January this year, a five-year-old girl had lost her life in Telangana’s Hyderabad after the manja of a flying kite got entangled around her neck and caused a deep cut. Nishvika Aditya (5) died on the spot due to profuse bleeding.

A 35-year-old man in Telangana’s Sangareddy district also lost his life in a similar incident on January 14. Avidesh, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh, was riding a motorcycle when the manja got entangled around his neck. He suffered a deep cut and died on the spot.

Thousands of birds also suffer grievous injuries due to the deadly manja and die painful deaths after their wings or necks get cut by the glass coated string.
