Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Traffic Police booked 413 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol during the checks conducted between December 18 and 24.

The drunk driving checks were conducted at Malkajgiri, Uppal, LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Chotuppal, Bhongir, Kushaiguda and Yadadri. Of the cases, the highest number of 345 cases were registered against two-wheeler riders, while 10 were against auto-rickshaws, 57 against car drivers and one case against a heavy vehicle.

“The checking is done regularly by the traffic police to prevent road accidents and cases are booked. All those caught are produced before court,” said a senior traffic police official.

During the last one week, 100 accidents were reported in Rachakonda in which 15 persons lost their lives while 88 sustained injuries. The accidents occurred mainly because of the negligence of drivers, overspeeding, driving under influence of alcohol and self-skid of vehicles.

The road accident data analysis has revealed that most of the accidents occurred due to human errors and road engineering defects, said the officials.

The traffic police in order to achieve the objective of ‘accident-free society’ are conducting regular awareness programs on road safety among the public. In the last one week, the police organised around 100 awareness programs at various places and about 2500 people attended it.

On the enforcement front, the traffic police booked cases against persons violating the helmet and seat belt rule, over speeding, dangerous driving, use of cell phone for driving and dangerous driving. A fine amount of Rs 1.37 crore was imposed on the violators.
