Hyderabad: Given the sharp rise in the number of electric vehicles, fifty more EV charging units are coming up in different locations across the city.

With the existing EV charging units in the city receiving a positive response and being in full usage, the GHMC has decided to increase the number of these charging units, keeping the demand in view.

The decision to increase the facility is driven by the continuing rise in the number of electric vehicles in the city and government’s encouragement on the use of electric vehicles to cut down carbon emissions and make Hyderabad a zero-carbon city.

The Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO), a nodal agency, has tied up with the GHMC to set up 50 new electric vehicle charging units in identified locations across Greater Hyderabad, a senior official of TGREDCO told ‘Telangana Today’.

The TGREDCO has setup 90 EV charging centres and another 40 charging centres are getting ready, according to a TGREDCO official. Recently, the TGREDCO received proposals to set up another 50 EV charging units in the city and with this, 180 EV charging centres will be available for the electric vehicle users.

The GHMC identified various locations in public areas like shopping malls, multiplexes, commercial complexes, and certain key areas with high public footfall to set up these EV charging centres.

“Each EV charging unit has high-speed charging with DC-001 (15KW) capacity and slow charging with C (122-150 KW) capacity facilities. For this, we need a 260 sft area where two vehicles can be charged at a time,” said the official. All the EV charging centres operate with renewable energy.

These units will be installed on a revenue-sharing model as mutually agreed upon by the GHMC and TGREDCO. Interestingly, all these charging units will soon have surveillance facilities to ensure the safety of the charging equipment. “We are concerned about incidents of materials being stolen from the EV charging units and have discussed it with the police. According to their advice, we decided to instal CCTVs at every EV charging unit to prevent theft,” added the official.
