Hyderabad: Doctors at city-based Century Hospitals enabled a 70-year-old individual to recover from Covid-19, after fighting it for 40 days.

CN Murthy, a resident from Bowenpally, tested positive for Omicron on January 22. In the ensuing weeks, despite medication, Murthy continued to test Covid positive and even lost 5 kg weight, as symptoms like fever persisted.

On February 24, Murthy consulted senior nephrologist, Century Hospitals, Dr Arun Kumar after a bout of non-stop fever. “Even after four weeks into infection, patient did not develop any Covid-19 antibodies, which is rare. By the time he was admitted, active Covid pneumonia was diagnosed and also functioning of his vital organs like kidneys started to deteriorate,” Dr Arun said.

It turned out that the patient was under medication for vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) and brain TB since 2010. “While brain TB has been cured, for vasculitis Murthy was on immunosuppressants which were the reason for his prolonged Covid infection,” he said.

Moreover, his kidneys were also damaged. “We stopped past medication, after which the patient started recovering quickly. In a week, the patient’s vital parameters were normal and cured of Covid infection,” doctors said.
