It is a story of a boy named Tom whose Birthday gets cancelled due to a series of unexpected events at his place. His pig “Tiny” kills his Nana’s (Maureen) pet dog “Margarita”, his sister Meg loses her tooth and thinks that she is cursed by the Tooth fairy and Tiny goes missing.
He finds Tiny at Mr. Hector’s place a few days after he goes missing. Tom and Hector become good friends. Tom decides to revoke his decision to cancel his special birthday (a birthday is special when the date and the age matches) with the help of “Resistigence Plan” (Resistance + Resilience). He tries to cheer up his sister Meg, his father (Lewis) and his mother (Joe).
He is successful in cheering up Meg and his father but his plan flops when they come to know about his plan from his friend Tom. Tom is still determined to revoke his decision to cancel his birthday and plans a Gladiator-Volcano themed birthday party. He gets the props for the party from the DIY shop with his pocket money.
Meg his sister bakes the birthday cake and the venue is chosen as Hector’s secret garden. All his friends and Nana gather for the party. When the party is halfway through, the rain pours down and stops the celebrations. A series of funny events take place after which everything settles down.
At the end, Tom’s father gets a big order to make pasta sauce from a big supermarket and his mother doesn’t have to work extra hours to provide for the family. I enjoyed the part when Meg and Tom’s father comes to know the truth that Harry (Tom’s friend) disguised as a tooth fairy and fooled them. I liked Nana’s character very much because I found her very entertaining.
I liked Tom’s character as well as he was incredibly determined to have his birthday party takes place. The book belongs to the Action-Adventure genre. But I think this book can also be a part of the humour genre as the story is narrated in a very funny way. I recommend this book to all my friends and all children above the age of 12.
