Mahabubabad: Flaws in the newly introduced facial recognition software used for recording attendance under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (VB-G RAM G) have been surfacing.
A recent incident in which the mobile software failed to recognise a labourer’s face after he had shaved his head has become a topic of debate in the district. According to locals, labourer Malyala Srinu from Komatipalli village in Inugurthi mandal of Mahabubabad district had visited the Kondagattu Anjaneya Swamy Temple two days ago and got his head tonsured as a ritual offering to the deity.
On Thursday, when he reported for work under the employment scheme, the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app failed to recognise his face during the attendance check. Despite multiple attempts, his attendance could not be recorded.
Consequently, he improvised by using black charcoal to outline a moustache and, to simulate the presence of hair on his head, he placed a woman’s hairpiece over his tonsured head. Only then did the app successfully recognise him. An onlooker captured the entire episode on a mobile phone and posted it on social media. The video has since gone viral, attracting amusing comments from netizens.
