The flagship campus of the Arkansas State University System, Arkansas State University (A-State) is a public research university located atop 1,376 acres on Crowley’s Ridge in Jonesboro, Arkansas. It is a doctoral-level national institution with more than 150 degrees areas of study, including a robust online programme, and a diverse student body from across the nation and the world. A-State is the second-largest university in Arkansas.
Founded in 1909 as the First District Agricultural School, it expanded its subject areas and student numbers in the early 20th century, becoming the First District Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1925. It later became Arkansas State College in 1933 and was elevated to university status by the Arkansas Legislature in 1967, becoming Arkansas State University. A-State began offering graduate programmes in 1955 and doctoral programmes in 1992.
It is the economic and cultural engine of Northeast Arkansas, hosting Arkansas’ first osteopathic medical school – the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. It also hosts the creation of Mexico’s first American-style university with ASUCQ in Queretaro and works with O’Reilly Management for the Red Wolf Convention Center and Embassy Suites.
Students at Arkansas State can choose from more than 160 degree programmes, including master’s programmes in business and health. The school offers several bachelor’s, master’s, and post-graduate degree programmes online. Students may also enroll in the Structured Learning Assistance program, which offers additional academic support for difficult classes.
A-State offers more than 150 majors across its seven colleges: Agriculture, Neil Griffin Business, Education and Behavioral Science, Engineering and Computer Science, Liberal Arts and Communication, Nursing and Health Professions, and Science and Mathematics. The university also has an Honors College program along with three subject area schools, Media and Journalism, Teacher Education and Leadership, and Nursing.
Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse, General Studies, Business Administration and Management, General, Early Childhood Education and Teaching, and Biology/Biological Sciences, General are the most popular majors at the university.
Arkansas State University is accredited by the regional institutional accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, Chicago, IL. The university library, the Dean B. Ellis Library, is one of the largest libraries in Arkansas. A great place for all international students, either on-campus or online, there are approximately 600 international students representing over 60 countries. A-State is ranked 130th out of 1,204 in the Overall Best Value US Colleges & Universities for International Students by College Factual. The College Factual also ranks A-State as 224th out of a total of 1,279 colleges and universities for popularity with international students.
Also ranked A-State as #921 out of 1,715 colleges and universities in the country on its 2021 Best Colleges list by College Factual. A-State also holds the #7 spot on the Best Colleges in Arkansas ranking. Arkansas State University is ranked by the US News and World Report as #9 of Regional Universities-South and as #28 of Top Public Schools. The online bachelor’s degree programs tie for the #4 spot in the listings.
