HYDERABAD: From a remote village in Adilabad district to the Indian Police Service, Chowhan Raj Kumar’s journey has taken him through a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and an engineering college in Warangal to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), where he completed the first phase of IPS training and will participate in the passing-out parade of the 78th Regular Recruit (RR) batch on Saturday.
A native of Mannur village in Adilabad district, Kumar cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2023 with an All India Rank of 703. He is now preparing to begin district training in Rajasthan, the cadre allotted to him, within a month.
Kumar studied at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Kagaznagar before pursuing engineering in Warangal. He said the IPS appealed to him because it offered both an opportunity to serve the public and a specialised professional role in maintaining law and order. “The Indian Police Service is a uniformed service with its own specialisation. It offers an opportunity to serve society through policing while developing professional expertise,” he said.
Coming from a family of educators, Kumar said his father is a government teacher, and his mother is also a teacher. His brother is pursuing his final year of MBBS, while his sister works at the Central Bank of India.
His schooling at Navodaya provided him with an opportunity to pursue his education away from his native village. The residential school system helped him continue his studies before he moved to Warangal for engineering and subsequently began preparing for the civil services examination.
