Hyderabad: Breathing some fresh air in lush green forests, trekking amidst some soothing sounds of chirpy birds and some star gazing under the sky from outside a tent, nature has always offered humans bliss away from chaos in life.
However, now this experience doesn’t just end at a weekend getaway as increasing numbers of youngsters choose to turn some adventure in nature’s lap onto their profession.
“The major requirement to make adventure your profession is an unending passion towards nature and everything surrounded by it – without which the profession may prove to be tough. And then comes some minimum fitness,” shares Eravalli Rohit, 29, who has been a professional adventurer for the past six years after quitting his corporate job.
What does a professional adventurer do?
As an increasing number of city dwellers wish to be in the midst of nature during their weekends, several adventure companies have seen the light of the day in recent times to cater to them. Like any other profession, even adventurers either join a company or start one of their own.
“These adventure companies have some identified spots, usually less than 100 km from the city where they host events. A group of people register for such events where the company offers activities like trekking, camping, rappelling, and small workshops about equipment used for all kinds of activities and how to set up a tent and so on,” shares Rohit, who has also scaled Goecha La (18,000 ft altitude) — a high mountain pass in Sikkim, and the southeast face of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain.
They do a recce of the area before taking a group to a certain spot to estimate the safety levels of the place and understand the scope for activities that can be planned. Beyond hosting these activities, adventurers who complete mountaineering courses can also lead a group in scaling various peaks in India and also around the world.
“Scaling peaks is a feeling of its own. The fulfilling experience cannot be compared to any. It is not just about trekking those mountains but it is a whole feeling of trekking your soul.
You will surely be a changed person and feel a transformation after a trek to any pass in India or abroad. It is a very fulfilling feeling. And to guide people to experience this bliss is a whole another level of satisfaction,” says Arunima Chakraborty, 34, who runs her own adventure company called ‘Trek the Soul’.
Women give wings to their passion
Turning adventure into a profession comes with several hurdles for a woman. First the safety and then the consent of families. However, a rising number of women are now seen going forward with it.
Noting that convincing parents might be a troublesome task but can be achieved with passion, Leela Velpuri, 29, who runs her own adventure company called ‘Climb On’, says, “Safety might be their major worry. But like any other outdoor profession, a woman has to be well-equipped with skills and the right tools for self defence – by attending adventure workshops.”
But being an adventure guide might be tougher for women than their male counterparts — to make a group obey to their instructions. However, a woman has to believe in her craft and maintain the sternness for a group to have trust in her, adds Leela.
