Hyderabad: The title of an upcoming Hindi action film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Yash Raj Films started a controversy. The film titled as ‘Prithviraj’ is based on an epic ‘Prithviraj Raso’ by Chand Bardai about the warrior king Prithviraj Chouhan. Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chillar are lead actors in the film.

The new controversy started after the infamous Karni Sena demanded a title change for the film. They claim that the movie title ‘Prithviraj’, shortened only to the first name of the King and it is disrespectful towards him. The organisation demanded the title of the film be changed to ‘Veer Yoddha Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan’. They also warned that non-compliance to the demands will have the same consequences that Sanjay Leela Bhansali faced for ‘Padmaavat’.

This is not the first time that the Rajasthan based organisation is raising voice against movies. In 2008, they protested against the film Jodhaa Akbar directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Karni Sena’s objection was about the depiction of a marriage between a Muslim King and Hindu princess in the movie. They demanded an apology from the director, but Gowariker denied it.

Similarly, in 2017 the organisation started a protest against the movie Padamaavat, which was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. They claimed that the film is distorting Rajput history and hurting community sentiments. The violent protests against the movie drew national attention and resulted in changing the title of the movie to Padmaavat from the early proposed ‘Padmavati’.
