Hyderabad: With the departure of India’s regular captain Virat Kohli after the pink-ball Test to attend the birth of his child, the onus was given to Ajinkya Rahane to lead the team in the remaining three Test matches against Australia.
With an embarrassing loss in the first Test, all eyes will be on Rahane on how he would marshal his troops in search of a good show. The departure of Kohli also leaves a big void in the batting order, making it more vulnerable. However, former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar feels Rahane should bat high in the batting order to bring stability to the unit.
“I think Rahane should promote himself to number four in Kohli’s absence. He has the experience and he has scored runs away from India. This is the time when a leader needs to stand up, I will be surprised if Rahane does not promote himself to number four,” Agarkar said.
“I think Shubman Gill should play, I have been advocating for that for a while, he has the potential. I know he opens for Punjab in domestic cricket, but if someone like him does well, he can serve Indian cricket for a long time,” Agarkar added.
